Our Mission
To provide safe and participant friendly land speed racing events for our membership.
About the SCTA
The SCTA is an all volunteer organization comprised of twelve individual clubs. Our mission is to provide safe and friendly Land Speed Racing (LSR) events for racing enthusiasts in both Southern California ;at the El Mirage Dry Lake; and at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. There are typically six events each year (May-Nov) at the El Mirage Dry Lake, and two events each year at the Bonneville Salt Flats (Speed Week and World Finals) weather permitting.
There are five officers that comprise the SCTA board (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Sergeant at Arms)They are nominated yearly by the general membership of the association and elected by ballots that are mailed to the membership. Those five elected officials appoint the remaining board members from the general membership. The SCTA general membership has also has the right to propose and vote on changes to the bylaws.
To be an SCTA member, you must be a member of one of the twelve affiliated clubs. Each club is entitled to a certain number of representatives to the board according to club size. These representatives attend all board meetings and express the concerns and wishes of the club membership. All of the rules, policies, etc. that govern the SCTA are adopted by board vote.
Nature of the Organization
The SCTA, a non-profit volunteer organization. We have only one
paid employee; who runs the SCTA/BNI office. We endeavor to
maintain our membership, answer questions about LSR events, sell LSR
merchandise to offset the cost of holding those yearly events and
equipment maintenance. We also intend to pass along information to the
membership and the public via printed material (rulebooks, programs,
posters, brochures) and the internet. Please bear with us, as we are a
100% volunteer organization and not a business for profit. All of
our officers and event staff are unpaid. We're in it for the love of the
sport and the fun, and we hope you are too.
The BNI is a separate entity under SCTA board control with their own
bylaws and subordinate board. The BNI is charged with the
responsibility of planning and organizing the Bonneville Salt Flat
events and coordinating all vendors and media. The SCTA actually
controls the Speed Week event under their rules and bylaws.
The SCTA board appoints the BNI officers, who must also be SCTA board
members. All decisions made by the BNI officers are done by
consensus. The BNI does not make rules or policy; this is all done by
the SCTA board. To become a member of the BNI, you simply purchase
a yearly membership. This membership gives you the right to participate
in any of the Bonneville Salt Flat events sanctioned by the SCTA. The
SCTA reserves the right to revoke membership to the BNI at any time.
